What this site is, and where the numbers come from
Live or Die Here is a reference for people deciding where in the United States to live. It covers all 50 states, the District of Columbia, five territories and 3,143 counties, with about 200 measures for each county: taxes, home prices and rents, income, crime, schools, health, weather, internet, and the state laws that follow you home. Every figure comes from a named public source with its year attached, most of them federal: the American Community Survey from the Census Bureau, the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Zillow home value index, the USDA natural amenities scale, County Health Rankings, NOAA climate normals, the FEMA National Risk Index, the FCC and Ookla for internet, and state revenue departments and the Tax Foundation for tax rates.
The pages are written from those figures, not from opinion. A county page places each of its numbers against every other county that reports the same measure, so you can read where it stands rather than trust an adjective. When a source does not report a county, the page says so instead of guessing. The site is made by Evil Robot MFG., an independent studio, and the data is refreshed as the sources publish, most of it nightly. How the site is built, who writes it and how to reach us are on the About page.
