North Carolina expanded gambling substantially in recent years. The state launched sports betting in March 2024, licensing eight online operators and going live before the NCAA Tournament — a timing that made the launch highly visible. DraftKings, FanDuel, ESPN Bet, and others all received licenses. The market was large immediately, reflecting North Carolina's size and sports-passionate culture.

Casino gambling in North Carolina is limited to the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, which operates Harrah's Cherokee Casino Resort in Cherokee and Harrah's Cherokee Valley River Casino and Hotel in Murphy. These are full-service properties in the western mountains. The lottery has operated since 2006. There are no commercial casinos outside of the tribal facilities.

For residents, sports betting is now accessible anywhere in the state through licensed apps. Casino access requires a trip to the Cherokee properties in the far west of the state, which can be several hours from Charlotte or Raleigh. Online casino gambling is not legal in North Carolina. The state went from having very limited gambling to having one of the more active mobile sports betting markets in a short period.
