South Carolina is among the most restrictive gambling states in the country. There are no casinos, no legal sports betting, and no card rooms. The state lottery launched in 2002 and funds the LIFE Scholarship and other education programs. That is the extent of legal gambling in South Carolina. The state constitution prohibits most forms of gambling, and there is no organized legislative effort currently to change that.

Offshore gambling boats historically operated from Myrtle Beach, sailing three miles out to international waters. Those operations largely ended in the early 2000s after federal crackdowns. Some charitable gaming in the form of bingo is permitted. The Cherokee Nation operates casinos just over the state line in North Carolina, and some South Carolina residents make that trip.

For residents, the practical situation is simple: there is very little legal gambling in South Carolina. Lottery tickets are available everywhere. Beyond that, if you want to bet on sports or visit a casino, you are leaving the state. The closest significant options are Harrah's Cherokee in North Carolina. The state's gambling restrictions reflect a conservative cultural and legislative consensus that has been durable.
