State Lottery
Alabama is among the most restrictive gambling states in the country. There is no state lottery, no commercial casinos, and no legal sports betting. The only gambling options are a handful of Native American bingo halls operated by tribal nations under federal law. Attempts to expand gambling through the legislature have failed repeatedly, often blocked by a coalition of religious conservatives and tribal interests protective of their limited market.
For residents, the practical reality is stark: if you want to gamble, you drive to neighboring Mississippi, Tennessee, or Florida. There is no app to download, no lottery ticket to buy at the gas station, no poker room in your county. Alabama is one of only five states without a lottery, which means the state also foregoes hundreds of millions in education funding that neighboring states capture.
Political pressure to change this has been building for years. A lottery and casino legalization package nearly passed in 2021 and came close again in subsequent sessions. If you move here expecting to see that change soon, don't count on it. The legislative math is difficult, and Alabama's gambling restrictions have survived decades of reform attempts.
