Iowa has one of the highest densities of casinos relative to population of any state. There are more than 19 licensed commercial casinos spread across the state, historically tied to riverboat gambling but now mostly land-based. The market is controlled by the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission. Sports betting launched in August 2019, just two months after Indiana and among the earliest in the country. Mobile betting is fully legal and requires no in-person registration.

The lottery has operated since 1985. Horse racing at Prairie Meadows Racetrack and Casino in Altoona is the primary live racing venue. The Iowa casino market is mature and competitive, with many properties offering hotel accommodations, entertainment, and dining beyond just the gaming floor.

For residents, Iowa's gambling access is genuinely broad. You are rarely more than 90 minutes from a commercial casino anywhere in the state. Mobile sports betting works through all major apps. The one notable gap is online casino gambling, which is not legal. The density of brick-and-mortar options compensates somewhat, but you cannot play slots or table games on your phone at home through a licensed Iowa operator.
