Michigan has one of the most complete legal gambling markets in the country. Detroit has three commercial casinos — MGM Grand Detroit, MotorCity Casino Hotel, and Greektown Casino-Hotel — all clustered downtown. Tribal casinos are distributed across the state, with Soaring Eagle Casino in Mount Pleasant among the largest. Sports betting launched in March 2020. Online casino gambling launched in January 2021, and Michigan quickly became one of the strongest regulated online casino markets in the country, with BetMGM, DraftKings, FanDuel, and others all active.
The lottery has operated since 1972 and is well-established. The combination of commercial casinos, tribal casinos, online casino gambling, and sports betting makes Michigan one of the few states where a resident can legally do essentially everything: bet on sports from a phone, play slots and table games online, visit a commercial casino downtown, or drive to a tribal resort.
For residents, Michigan is as permissive as any non-Nevada state. Mobile sports betting and online casino gambling are both fully operational. Detroit residents have three commercial casinos within city limits. The rest of the state is served by tribal facilities. Revenue from online casino gambling has exceeded projections year after year, making Michigan a reference point for other states considering online expansion.
Detroit's 3 commercial casinos plus tribal casinos statewide. Online casino gambling legal since 2021 — strong market.
