Indiana was among the earliest states to launch legal sports betting after PASPA fell, going live in September 2019. The state has 13 licensed commercial casinos operating under a riverboat and land-based framework, concentrated along the Ohio River corridor and the Lake Michigan shoreline. The French Lick Resort casinos in the southern part of the state add a historic resort dimension to the market. Mobile sports betting is fully legal and does not require in-person registration.
The lottery has operated since 1989. Horse racing operates at Hoosier Park Racing and Casino in Anderson and Indiana Grand Racing and Casino in Shelbyville, both of which have added full casino floors under the racino model. The casino regulatory framework has been stable for decades, and Indiana is considered one of the better-run commercial casino markets in the Midwest.
For residents, Indiana is a permissive state. Mobile sports betting works statewide through apps like DraftKings, FanDuel, and BetMGM. A commercial casino is reachable within an hour or two for most of the state's population. Online casino gambling is not legal in Indiana, which separates it from neighboring Michigan. Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, and Kentucky all legalized sports betting around the same time, making competition between border states a real factor in how Indiana maintains its market.
