State Laws & Overview
New York state law (Penal Law §245.01) prohibits public nudity but women's toplessness is legal statewide (People v. Santorelli, 1992). No officially designated nude beaches in New York state. Gunnison Beach at Sandy Hook is in New Jersey but is the primary nude beach for New York City residents. Fire Island's Cherry Grove and The Pines have longstanding traditions of clothing-optional areas on private property.

The closest legal nude beach to New York City, though technically in New Jersey. National Park Service land with designated clothing-optional swimming area. Lifeguards on duty in season. Very popular with NYC-area naturists.
Access: Sandy Hook Unit of Gateway NRA; ferry from Manhattan available seasonally, or drive via Garden State Parkway
