Idaho allows tribal casino gambling under federal compacts, but the state constitution explicitly prohibits most other forms of commercial gambling. Eight tribes operate casinos in Idaho, including Coeur d'Alene Casino Resort in Worley and Shoshone-Bannock Fort Hall Casino. These are the primary casino destinations for residents. A state lottery operates and is constitutionally permitted. Horse racing has a presence, primarily through simulcast wagering.

Sports betting is illegal in Idaho. The state has not passed enabling legislation, and the tribal casinos have not pursued sports betting under their current compacts. Idaho is one of the quieter gambling states in the West despite being surrounded by Nevada, Oregon, and Montana, all of which have more permissive frameworks.

For residents, your options are a tribal casino or lottery tickets. There is no legal sportsbook app, no commercial casino, and no poker room outside a tribal facility. Boise is about four hours from Reno and closer to several Oregon tribal casinos. Idahoans who want more gambling options either cross state lines or do without.

Tribal casinos only. Constitution limits commercial gambling. Horse racing legal.

When can you gamble in Idaho?

Things to Know Adults must be 18 years old to enter the casino, 21 or older to drink.

Why is the gambling age 21 instead of 18?

Casinos that are located on land in the United States have a gambling age of 21, which complies with the legal drinking age so they can allow liquor to be served while playing. Casinos that are on tribal land have slightly different restrictions and can set the age limit lower, typically 18 or 19.

What two states are gambling illegal in?

The only US states that do not have casinos are Hawaii, Utah, Georgia, and South Carolina. As domestic dependent nations, American Indian tribes have used legal protection to open casinos, which has been a contentious political issue in California and other states.
